What music do swing dancers dance to?
Swing dancers love the swinging jazz sounds of the 20s, 30s and 40s. The Lindy Hop grew and evolved with the swing music of that era and it’s what we still dance to today! Some names from the era to get your collection started would be: Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Chick Webb, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Jimmie Lunceford, Lionel Hampton, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman (among so many others!)
There are also quite a lot of modern bands recreating that swing sound these days. Check out Naomi and Her Handsome Devils, Gordon Webster, Solomon Douglas, George Gee Orchestra, Alex Pangman and the list can go on!
Us Perthies are lucky to have bands like the Oz Big Band, Adam Hall and the Velvet Playboys, The Swing Shift Big Band and others to keep our feet happy with some live swinging tunes!
A Practise Playlist for you!
We often get students asking us for recommendations on tunes to practise to, so we’ve put together this little Spotify playlist for you. We’ll keep adding to it over time, enjoy!
