Do I need to bring a partner?

Nope! We rotate partners in class, so you’ll get a chance to meet and dance with some wonderful people, which also is a great way to learn!

Are complete beginners welcome?

Yes! We love having new dancers in the scene and our Level 1 class at 6:30 is the perfect place to start!

What should I wear to class?

We recommend wearing something comfy. So flat soled shoes, comfortable clothes. Perhaps even a change of clothes on hot days, as you will get sweaty! On that note, don’t forget a bottle of water!

When can I start / Do I need to wait for a specific week?

Our classes are designed to be drop in,and we cover the basics each week, so you can join in any time! Our courses do progress over 6 weeks, so some weeks can be a bit more challenging but you’ll get something out of them whenever you join!

I’ve done some other styles of dancing, so I still need to start with the Level 1 class?

Lindy Hop does have it’s own unique styling and we’d love to introduce you to some of the history of the dance in our Level 1 classes, so you do need to start with the basics. However, your teachers will keep an eye out and if they feel you’re ready to step up, they’ll let you know!

What is Swing Dancing?

Swing Dancing is an African American dance, created with and danced to the swinging jazz music of the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s!   These decades were referred to as the ‘swing’ era of jazz, when massive big bands blasted their music to the dance floor and jazz was the most exciting and popular form of music.  In fact there are many types of swing dancing, such as Balboa and Shag, but the biggest swing dance of them all, the Lindy Hop, which was born within the African American communities of Harlem, New York City; was poised to take over the world …

What is the Lindy Hop?

The Lindy Hop is the biggest of the swing dances. You know those movies set during WW2 where the dance scenes have girls being thrown through the air? Well, that’s Hollywood’s version of it! They’re Jitterbugs dancing the Jitterbug and going crazy on the dance floor! Don’t worry, in reality you can go through an entire night without leaving the ground.

The Lindy Hop developed at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, New York back in the 30s and was pretty much a street dance that evolved over time with the dancers imitating and out doing each other.  The big bands were the music of the era, and when they started to swing, so did the dancers. In the 40’s Lindy Hop spread throughout the world during World War II and to this day Lindy Hoppers celebrate and dance to the music from this era.

This clip from the movie Hellzapoppin’ is one of the original and best Lindy Hop clips of all time, starring some of the most famous Lindy Hoppers of all time, (in order of appearance) Frances “Mickey” Jones and William Downes, Norma Miller and Billy Ricker, Willamae Ricker and Al Minns, Ann Johnson and Frankie Manning !  To show you the smooth and playful side of Lindy Hop, we’ve included a clip of Jo and Kevin, two of our favourite modern Lindy Hoppers.

About Us

Our School

Perth Swing Dance Academy is a dance school dedicated to the vintage swing dancing of the jazz era. We also focus our attention on the culture of the swing dances including the music and the musicians, the styles and fashion, the language, and the major events of the time.

Our Community

We are more than a school. We are a community of Lindy Hoppers that come together to share this dance experience. It is a fun and friendly environment where people can ask anyone else to dance and feel valued. This community extends worldwide to every Lindy Hop scene on the planet. Wherever there is Lindy Hop, you will find friends.

Our Style

Our classes are designed to be fun and engaging for our students, with an easy path to learn social dancing well. We believe in smooth dance connections that make each partner feel comfortable, while still having the freedom to be musical and creative.

Our Passion

The Lindy Hop encompasses all aspects of dance from social dancing to performance, body awareness, and connection with your partner and to the music. It can be a fun silly dance or it can be profoundly creative and expressive. It is this richness of Lindy Hop that we wish to share with everyone that they may find themselves by losing themselves in the dance.
